Mr. Seely uses a hand drill (with a large bit!) to drill a hole into the maple tree to install a tap. Once the tap is inserted into the tree, a bucket is attached to the tap to collect the sap as it runs out. Fresh tree sap looks exactly like water so it has to be boiled down to evaporate the excess water and leave the sweet, maple syrup.
